Transparent QR code generator

No white box. The modules sit directly on whatever is behind them — which is powerful, and easy to get wrong.

Short answer

A transparent QR code has no background fill, so whatever sits behind it shows through the light modules. Tick the transparent option in design settings, then export as PNG or SVG. Both formats support full transparency; JPG does not.

The catch

Transparency moves the contrast problem, it does not solve it

A decoder distinguishes light from dark. With a transparent background, the light modules become whatever the artwork behind them happens to be — and artwork is rarely a flat, even tone.

Where transparent codes fail:

  • Over a photograph, where the background shifts from light to dark across the code.
  • Over a colour that is close in luminance to the module colour. Mid-blue modules on a mid-green background look fine to a human and read as identical grey to a camera.
  • Over any pattern or texture with detail at the module scale.
  • Where the quiet zone falls on busy artwork — scanners need clear space to find the code, and transparency does not create it.

The fix is not clever: put the code over a flat, light area. If the artwork will not allow that, add a solid light panel behind it. A white box is not a design failure, it is how the format works.

Contrast

A quick check that predicts scan success

Convert both colours to greyscale and compare. If the difference in perceived lightness is under about 40%, the code is at risk. Practical version: take a screenshot, apply a black-and-white filter, and look at it — if you struggle to see the pattern, so will a camera.

CombinationVerdict
Black modules, transparent over white paperIdeal
Dark navy over a pale cream backgroundReliable
Dark grey over a light photographRisky — depends on the photo
Mid-tone colour over a mid-tone backgroundFails
Light modules over a dark background (inverted)Fails on many older scanners
Any colour over a busy patternFails
Questions

Frequently asked

Which formats support transparency?
PNG and SVG. JPG has no alpha channel and will fill the background with white.
Can I put a transparent QR code over a photo?
You can, but it usually fails. Photos vary in brightness across the frame, so parts of the code lose contrast. Place a flat light panel behind it instead.
Will a transparent code print correctly?
Yes, and the transparent areas print as bare paper. Make sure the paper is light and the quiet zone is clear.
Can I invert it — light modules on a dark background?
The format allows it and modern phones often manage, but a meaningful share of older scanners will not. Dark modules on light is the safe choice.
