PDF QR code generator

A QR code cannot hold a PDF, but it can hold the link to one. Host the file somewhere stable, paste the address here, and the code will open it on any phone.

Short answer

A QR code cannot store a PDF file — a QR code holds at most 2,953 bytes, while a one-page PDF is typically 50,000 or more. What a PDF QR code stores is the link to a hosted file. Upload the PDF to your website or a cloud drive, then encode that public URL.

Better than a PDF

When a web page is the right answer instead

PDFs are fixed-width documents designed for paper. Phones are not paper. If your PDF is a menu, a price list, a brochure or an event programme, a simple mobile web page will outperform it every time: no download, no pinch-zoom, no PDF viewer that opens in a random app.

If instead you are producing a document and need a code inside the PDF itself, that is a different job.

Keep the PDF when the document genuinely needs to be a document — a warranty, a technical datasheet, a form to print and sign, a certificate, an instruction manual people will save. Otherwise, build a page and link to that.

File hygiene

Three checks before the code goes to print

  1. Size. Under 5 MB. A 40 MB brochure over a weak mobile signal is a scan that gets abandoned halfway.
  2. Metadata. PDF properties carry the author name, the software used and sometimes the original file path. Clear them before publishing.
  3. Direct link. The URL should open the file itself, not a preview page with a download button behind another click.
Questions

Frequently asked

Can a QR code contain the actual PDF file?
No. The absolute maximum any QR code can hold is 2,953 bytes, which is smaller than almost any real PDF. The code stores a link to the hosted file.
How do I make a QR code for a PDF on Google Drive?
Open the file in Drive, choose Share, set access to Anyone with the link, copy the link and paste it into the generator. Test it in a private window before printing.
Will the code break if I replace the PDF?
Only if the URL changes. Upload the new version at exactly the same path and the existing printed code keeps working — which is a good reason to host on your own domain.
Can people scan it without internet?
No. The code carries a link, and following a link needs a connection. If offline access matters, encode the content as plain text instead.
