Short answer

An event QR code encodes an iCalendar VEVENT block containing the title, start and end times, location and description. Scanning it offers to add the event to the phone's calendar with all fields prefilled. It works offline and needs no ticketing platform.

Time zones

The detail that gets events wrong by an hour

The generator writes local times without a time-zone identifier, which is correct for a physical event: the calendar interprets the time in the device's own zone, and everyone attending in person is already in that zone.

For an online event with an international audience, that behaviour is wrong — a viewer in another country will see the wrong hour. In that case, encode a link to a registration page that handles time-zone conversion instead.

Not a ticket

What this code is not

An event code fills in a calendar entry. It is not a ticket, it carries no unique identifier, and it cannot be validated at a door. Anyone who photographs it gets the same entry.

Real ticketing needs a unique code per attendee and a scanner app that checks each one against a list — that is a bulk generation job, or a ticketing platform. Use the calendar code on the invitation, the poster and the confirmation email; use a ticketing system at the door.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does it work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. The VEVENT format is recognised by iOS and Android calendars, though some Android scanner apps handle it better than the stock camera.
Can I include a recurring event?
The format supports recurrence rules, but scanner support is patchy. For a repeating event, link to a calendar subscription page instead.
Can this be used as a ticket?
No. It contains no unique identifier and cannot be validated. Use a ticketing system with one unique code per attendee.
What happens if the event is postponed?
The printed code keeps the old date. For events likely to move, encode a link to an event page you can update.
