Choosing a QR code generator

We built one of these, so treat this page with appropriate suspicion. It is written to be useful anyway, including the cases where you should use something else.

Short answer

The right QR code generator depends on one question: do you need to edit the destination or count scans after printing? If not, a static generator with no account is simpler, permanent and free. If yes, you need a dynamic platform, and you should choose one that lets you use your own domain.

Cases where this site is the wrong choice

Stated plainly, because a comparison that never recommends a competitor is an advertisement:

  • You need scan analytics you can act on. Static codes report nothing. If a scan count changes what you do next, use a dynamic platform, or build the redirect yourself.
  • You need to change destinations after printing and cannot control the destination page. A dynamic platform is the direct answer.
  • You need team management and audit trails. Multiple people, permissions, a record of who changed what. That is a platform feature.
  • You need thousands of codes generated programmatically. Use an open-source QR library inside your own pipeline rather than any hosted tool.
  • You need GS1 Digital Link compliance for retail packaging. Specialist tooling exists for the structured formats.
What to compare

Six questions that actually separate them

  1. Is the output static or dynamic? Decode a test code and read the domain. Everything else follows from this.
  2. What happens to existing codes if you stop paying? Find the answer in the terms, not the pricing page.
  3. Can you use your own domain for dynamic codes? If not, your printed material depends on a domain you do not control.
  4. Is vector output free? SVG behind a paywall is the most common upsell, and it is the format print shops want.
  5. Where does encoding happen? Client-side means your Wi-Fi passwords and wallet addresses never leave the device.
  6. Is there a watermark or a commercial-use restriction? Check before printing, not after.
This one

What it is built for, and what it is not

This generator does one thing: it produces static codes in your browser, with no account, at print quality, for free. It is built for people printing something — menus, cards, labels, packaging — who want the code to still work in five years without a subscription.

It deliberately does not offer scan tracking, editable destinations, team accounts or a hosted API, because all four require running a service that your printed material would then depend on. That is a real trade-off, not a limitation we are working towards fixing.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best free QR code generator?
For static codes that must last, any generator producing a code with your own URL inside it. Verify by decoding a test code before you commit.
Are paid QR code generators worth it?
They are if you need editable destinations, scan analytics or team management. If you need none of those, you are paying for a redirect you could host yourself.
Which generators put a watermark on free codes?
It varies and changes often. Generate a test code and look at the download before deciding — that is faster and more current than any list.
Can I switch generators later?
For static codes, there is nothing to switch — the codes are files you own. For dynamic codes, switching means reprinting, because the encoded domain belongs to the old provider.
